La Roux needs no 'Supervision' on first album in six years

March 11, 2023 @ 12:00 pm. Roux for a Reason will be hosting our 6th Annual Gumbo Cook-Off on March 11, 2023 at Southdown Plantation. We hope to make this one our biggest event yet. Event proceeds will be dedicated to funding a comprehensive nutrition program at Mary Bird Perkins TGMC Cancer Center. We greatly appreciate the continued support.


La Roux Supervision

At Roux For A Reason's first cook-off in 2017, the organization saw tremendous success. More than 30 teams showed up to compete for the awards of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and the People's Choice (1st Place—Cenac Towing, 2nd Place—Houma Digestive Health, 3rd Place—Norby Chabert, People's Choice—Roux-Jects).

Roux for a Reason was further able to donate $90,000 of money raised from their 2023 Gumbo Cook Off to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to support their fight against cancer. All fresh food cooking for the event must be done on premise the day of event. Only roux and stock can be brought to the event. Teams will be provided one tray of rice for serving, if needed. Please inform Roux for a Reason if your dish includes rice so we can plan accordingly. Teams will provide samples to the public.

Two reasons. First, a roux is useful for cooking the raw flavor out of the starch, which leads to better flavor and aroma in the final dish. And second, when you combine the starch with a fat, each starch granule becomes coated in the fat. By keeping the flour granules apart, the fat helps them disperse more evenly when combined with a liquid.
