Step 3: Add 1/4″ round on the top of the board. I wanted the molding to have a finished look like the rest of the house. Sometimes just a little piece of simple molding (like a 1/4″ round) can make the baseboards feel so much more finished. The pine board is 1″ x 8″ so the 1/4 round fit perfectly on the top.

STEP 3: Measure and Cut the Baseboard, Starting in One Corner. When cutting baseboard, there are a few rules to keep in mind: Always measure and cut each baseboard one at a time as you go. DON'T cut all baseboard pieces at the same time. Fitting and cutting pieces as you go allows for more precise measurements.

This Old House Sawdust Girl There are several ways you can lay the 1×4 boards that will give you different looks. I tried a few and ended up selecting a simple mitered corner. No additional trim or 1×2. No overlapping or overhang. I loved it so much that I plan to rip out the trim I JUST installed in the kitchen and use this style.

19 comments Best Why don't you return your order and just buy 1/2"? It's cheaper and less work. I haven't ordered any yet, just picked up a few test pieces. But I haven't seen any 1/2" x 4" primed pine, at least at Home Depot. We used 1x8 primed pine for a modern lake house reno - looks awesome. Go big or go home!

#1 Advice on 1x4 flatsawn base moulding 10-05-2006, 10:12 PM So I'm thinking I run base molding - painted 1x5 poplar as my baseboard. Any advice on cuts.. I've seen one house where they just butt up against each other. Outside corners were mitered though and not butting up to form the corner. Is there a correct method/style to this.. Tags: None

Craftsman Trim Baseboard, Craftsman Style Window Trim, Craftsman

I'm trying to decide between 1x6 and 1x4 baseboard trim. I have installed craftsman/farmhouse style window casings (slightly seen in photo) and will be going for a modern-ish farmhouse design. My ceilings are low at 92" high. If I do anything larger than 3.5" trim ( 1x4) I will need to route small sections of trim to fit underneath wall.

It's really common to use 1x4 or 1x6 for baseboards, I don't know who would be so opposed to that. An extremely common way of dressing up the 1x baseboard style is to put some sort of cap piece on top of the 1x, like an ogee base cap. Almost every house from the 20s-50s has that look. 1x4 pine for baseboards? I'm redoing some floors in my house and was wondering if using 1x4 pine boards as base boards is a good idea. I have a few screwed into the studs to help keep the floor aligned and I like the look. I pretty much have a infinite supply of free 1x4's & 1x6's from work.
